The history of the music video
As music videos become the norm of the music culture and the industry rate of growth is continuing to dominate the media world producing revenues in their billions even with single companies alone, this has certainly changed from the days of basic effects and small budgets. The music video empire first grew from the popularity of a British band called ‘Queen’.
Their song “Bohemian Rhapsody" which was inspired and wrote by their lead singer Freddie Mercury. The song became an instant success, exceeding expectations as it stayed at the top of the charts for nine weeks. The innovative video which was created in just three hours and costs as little as $3,500 really indicates the change in the market and music industry as videos such as Michael Jacksons “ scream” video cost an estimated $7,000,000 to create. The change in the production of the music video helped to create the global empire now recognized as MTV.On august 1st 1981 mtv became the first aired music channel to hit the television empire. With its first music video the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" being broadcast mtv’s music videos soon became the most innovative stuff on TV. The importance of videos in today’s market helps to create ‘profile’ and voice of a specific artist. Music videos today express the deep emotions of suburban life and express the feelings of the artist. Common examples of the effects of a music video which captivate attention due to their political views are that of Michael Jackson. The expression and messages of his feelings in videos such as ‘man in the mirror’ attract a wider range of audiences towards MTV especially in the 80’s.These videos are still closely linked and used to inspire new bands and artists within the industry. Another change to the tradition music video is the element of choreographed dancing. Michael Jacksons ‘thriller’ helped music videos go into a new direction as the element of dance made other artist such as yazz show a less restricted performance. This tied in well with the top of the pops era as there would be more of a choreographed performance than just singing. After the start of Queens first music video there was an increase in the number of artists beginning to create their own music videos.
Many artists realised the music video would help promote themselves and would show more than just the singing. Artists started involving themselves in their own music videos which showed their own personal sides whilst showing elements of life such as love and death; this can be seen in music videos such as Lionel Richie’s “Hello”. This element attracted sales as the audience would be more observant as there is a tale amongst the song.
New techniques were on the horizon in the mid 80’s as producers used a wide range of styles such as animation, action filming and abstract content in their videos. This would prove successful as it would later become a norm in the music video world. Artists today still use these techniques to draw in their target audiences as the videos would appeal to them, technically and through the meaning being represented within the video. As music videos were popular with professional artists in the 80’s to 90’s there seemed to be a change in the direction and availability of the market. Due to technological advances more people found it easier to search for their desired music videos. Within the early 21st century PayPal employees created the phenomenon know as Youtube. With millions of users posting individual videos , there became a market for the amateur performers to create and post their own music videos. This really changed the way of the market as there would be a cheaper and easier way to listen and view your favourite music video. This was important for the audience as they
Would therefore be able to listen many times without having to listen to different artists and bands. This technological change helped separate the music industry as “classes” were formed to distinguish music videos such as classical, pop and rock. These genres are used today to help categorise these music videos with the audience’s style which helps them now choose on what music they want to hear. Another change in the music industry which helps access music videos easier is the importance and popularity of sky. In particular as the MTV generation has become more technically advanced with equipment such as mobile ringtones and the internet more people decide to listen and observe artists music videos through television in particular sky.
As MTV (created in 1981) capitalise on the television industry, they have created an empire which was seen as a promotional tool for the recording industry. A negative criticism towards MTV was that it was viewed as devaluing the importance of the music video and also seen as a replacing with quality visual aesthetics instead.
To help solve this problem MTV decided to create more channels throughout sky. This would help create a larger audience for mtv as the choices ranged from music to television. Due to the rise of YouTube mtv has dramatically reduces its music video hours. Since 2000 where MTV showed eight average hours of music videos a day. MTV has decided to focus more on its popular television shows such as “pimp my ride” and “cribs “which made them only show on average only three hours a day of music video content.
Whilst MTV tried to compete with online websites and competition from other channels seeking space on sky, top of the pops would come to an end after over 40 years on screen. The key reason for its controversial decision to pull out of the bbc was apparently due to it no longer being able to compete with 24 hour music channels. Another reason towards the fall of the once home of music and iconic figure of the music industry was due to the decrease in the number of audience. In the heyday of the 1970’s it was estimated top of the pop reached over an estimated 15 million viewers but by 2002 these figures has decreased and dropped to around 3 million.
With the internet appealing to a greater audience, many groups and artists target this form as they create podcasts, and promote through individual website. Within the 21st century groups such as Linkin park and u2 use the internet to help sales through popular download sites such as iTunes as it is more profitable due to greater sales. As there are more changes within the market , the industry have to find ways to captivate the attention of the audience through different forms. As music videos change to fit with new technology , we will always remember the forms of music videos which helped change the music industry forever , even those such as queens ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, without these the music industry would find fewer ways to capture an audience’s attention and would make music less accessible for the audience due to a less publicized market. Thanks to TV forms such as MTV, artists work can be viewed and listened to constantly helping their work become alive due to their music videos. Without these the music industry would be more restraint and would loose there importance due to a smaller audience. Since the start of the music video there is always something different with each video which will hopefully carry on the importance of music forever within the music world.
