Music video Research Analysis of Linkin Park - "What ive done"

I decided to choose the song what Ive done by Linkin park as it is very meaningful and symbolic. The video would also give me alot to analyse and would also help me with planning my own research.

Click the link below to see Linkin Parks - What ive done

http://www.youtube.c...h/?v=8sgycukafqQ

I have decided to breakdown the key analysis into different categories below

Genre-

Linkin Park differ from most rock/punk bands as they try to express themselves through a variety of genres. We see this through rock albums such as Hybrid theory ( 2000) and also less aggressive albums such as minutes to midnight ( 2007). The band claim exploring a variety of genres allows them to be influenced and influence others with music as there are fewer barriers between them.Within the music video " what ive done" Linkin Park follow a subtle rock approach as they portray aspects of war, hunger and life/death.This approach links well with the genre of Linkin parks music as there is a clear message given within the video.

Imagery-

Throughout the video their are many quickly paced shots of differnt issues and problems hasing our current world. This issues are shown and deemed important throughout the song as they link with the image.

Below are the lyrics

"What I've Done"In this farewellThere’s no bloodThere’s no alibi‘Cause I’ve drawn regretFrom the truthOf a thousand lies
[Pre-Chorus:]So let mercy comeAnd wash awayWhat I’ve done
[Chorus:]I'll face myselfTo cross out what i’ve becomeErase myselfAnd let go of what i’ve donePut to restWhat you thought of meWhile .
I clean this slateWith the hands of uncertainty
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus]For what I’ve done...

I decided to include these lyrics as there is a clear link between the imagery and message of the band in the video and the lyrics within the song. The imagery within this video is an important aspect as the images which are being reflected show a negative view on societies actions on a global scale. As the band aim to show these issues within the video the imagery will be strong as there is a clear message within the video. This will ultimately be important as the band stress this through the lyrics and the video content which reflect societies actions.

blogging

Linkin park constantly blog abou their activity to their fans. Even on the website www.linkinpark.com there is a large section on blogging between the fans and the band. Blogging enables Linkin Parks fans to know what they are currently doing and what type of mood the band are in. Without this all there fans would rely on would be news interviews and less consistancy.
Below is the blogging section of the Linkin park website.

Bands also use blogging on websites such as twitter and facebook to update on their current status's . This is effective as the band can interact with their fans on a global scale.
Other videos with analysis

- Here are a few more music videos which i have looked at and analysed.

30 seconds to Mars - A beautiful lie

  • Performance video

  • Reflects human emotions of anger and rage through lyrics and facial expression

  • tries to show the effects of global warming, this is shown at the beginning of the video

  • - ( A beautiful lie ) , lyrics link with the video as they capture the audiences attention about the subject which they are concerned about within the video ( global warming )

  • The video captures a raw setting in Greenland 200 miles north of the Arctic circle.

  • The directors wanted to show a raw and meaningful setting and location as this enables greater effect on the audience of the importance of the message that is shown.

  • The band add to this as their is little equipment such as ropes , wires and amplifiers, this ultimately again reinforces this image.

All time low- Lost in stereo

  • Narrative/ performance video

  • The video captures the band touring across the USA .

  • The audience can distinguish this is partly a performance video as the main focus of the video is the band whilst they play in different locations and sets.

  • No narrative is shown within the video as it is purely footage of the band playing.

  • The audience are used to add to this effect of performance

  • Shots include a range from mid shots of the lead singers face/ facial expressions to a long shot of the whole band and the audience.

  • Shots which are tilted upwards create the view of the audience as we believe we are amongst the crowd whilst the band perform.

  • The narrative within this video is the actual journey of touring as they show clips of backstage action and different locations. This makes the video partly narrative as the narrative is the journey through the USA.

  • Enrique Iglesias - Hero

  • Iglesias plays an honourable criminal hunted by his enemies

  • The video is a narrative video

  • His love interest is reflected within his lyrics and the narrative

  • Set in an deserted desert where true emotions are reflected as Iglesias relationship is stirred up by his enemies tracking him down.

  • The love is portrayed through character interaction as they join together and connect.

Locations

Bodmin moor close
I have decided to choose this location for the video as there are many houses and several areas of greenery. This would be important for our music video as we need there to be only a little bit of evidence of suburban surroundings. The location meant we could film for longer as its close to get to and easy to access.
Moor lane - I decided to choose this location for the running part of the music video as it has an accessible pathway near Bodmin and can also be used frequently within our filming. This location allowed us to film for longer and from different camera aangles as we could easily use aquipment without being problems such as battery life on cameras and the weather as it was close to school. Using this street enabled us to continue with the flow of the video as the setting links well with the previous shot.

North Kesteven/ Moor lane ( west wall)

This location helped us gain many shots of the lead character and was effective within our filming. We used this location as it again was accessible and was similar to what we imagine the shot would be like. We were able to capture many shots such as close ups and many mid-shots within this location as it helped us establish the characters location.

Ideas for a music video

Ideas for our music video

I am focusing on the performance part of the music video making. We commonly see performance pieces from bands as this creates a more personal video , drawing the audience even closer to how to musicians are portraying their feelings through song and shots of only the band in a specific location. This type of video is commonly used by popular bands such as Paramore and their single “ignorance”.
For our own video we may include this aspect as it’s an easier way to draw in an audience and a cheaper way to create a music video for our chosen band. One idea for the music video with the inclusion of pure performance is the band in a studio performing their single without them being in a different location. This idea could be a great way to “show off “the band as the audience would be able to establish the members in the band as this would be their first debut video in front of an audience.
Another idea which we could use to help promote the band with their first video is to perform in an area which differs from a music related set such as a recording studio or within a professional setting. This could be done outdoors or in places which we tend to not relate with the music video, doing so could make our video more realistic within our budget as we do not have to spend too much on the actual making and location of the video.
Doing this would also help still create a video which gives off a professional finish as many bands such as All American Rejects and Nickelback have succeeded in this type of video, attracting a large audience and following towards their music and videos created in the performance way.
Our group believe a good way in creating a music video is to use all the instruments which you would find in the studio such as the drum kit and mics and would like to possibly incorporate this into the band music video. This could be a good idea as this would show the group as a whole without the lead singer being within the video alone or most of the time. This could be a great way in again showing the band off as a whole as it clearly shows who are actually in the band and what their role is.
These ideas could be used to create this video as specific aspects of these ideas above could be used to create a professional music video for the band. An important part of exploring different ideas for our music video is to also view other music videos which are affective and are professional. As many have a high budget we will simply not have funding for extravagant effects and sets so we have to find a solution for this issue.
After viewing many indie and rock bands, we found that there are many ways to help create a solution for this problem as we could use regular places to possibly shoot the video such as outdoors or within a vehicle. Whilst observing many amateur successful videos I found that the group ‘feeder’ used this method to help create videos which were cheap to produce but still had similar effects to a more expensive video.
Many of these ideas above may be adopted or suggested for our final video. We have covered possible ways to get round an issue as the music video must be inexpensive but still be professional. Whilst analysing videos from artists such as nickelback we have a clear understanding of what our group are able to produce and hopefully use similar types of camera shots and ideas to create our own music video.

Music Video Research: Camera Shots and Skills
These images show key camera shots that I will include in my music video with some key skills that i have to consider when creating my music video.

Establishing Shot (EST) / Long Shot (L/S): This type of shot is commonly used to add a greater context to the beginning image sequence to help the audience in determining where something is and its location. Quite often two different shots are used one after another in this establishing shot which we can use to make the image sequence easier for the audience to follow. This helps as the first shot adds context, whilst the second typically helps the audience understand what scene is which and in what location it is set.

Mid Shot (M/S): This shot includes a fair area of background which still establishes location/time. The mid shot also includes the main focus ( character or object) within the shot which helps promote general detail to sense of dress, facial expressions and also helps create a sense of belonging within the shot. This can be used within music videos to promote a sense of action and attention to detail whilst helping the audience understand what is happening, these shots generally are taken from the waist up to promote this.

Two Shot: The two shotis similar to that of a Mid-shot which includes two different characters in the same shot. This type of shot is conventionally used when the two characters are having a conversation with each other to show expression or an action in which they are doing. This also can be seen in shots where they try to express relationships and expression between them.

Close Up (C/U): This help focus the attention of the audience onto the character. This is typically use for shots that show a conversation between two people and can be use with a two shot. A close up helps show attitude and feelings which you cannot find in great detail in other furthur away shots such as mid/ establishing shots. This attention to detail helps the audience see the emotions within the shot and understand what is going on and on a greater and personal level than that of another shot.

extreme Close Up (ECU): These types of shot also go one step further than the close up as they pay specific detail to emotions of the face. These shots focus in on body part generally shown to show emotion such as the eyes to express a range of emotions from fear to happiness. We see this shot as it clearly indicates to an audience a specifc feeling from that of a character which we can as an audience understand.

Extreme Close Up (ECU): Extreme close ups can also include objects or other non facial expressions. The importance of the object is shown through this shot such as a ring or a phone to show its sygnificance as it generally stays wwithin the shot for a greater time than another type of shot. The object is viewed closely whilst its viewed and deemed sygnificant and important to the video or collection of shots as it shows the greatest detail.
Conventions Of Framing:
Headroom:
The headroom is the space between the top of the frame and generally the character. The headroom between has to be correct as the character can look unproportioned in the image, this is why there has to be a perfect balance as if you get this factor wrong the image will look unbalanced and visually incorrect. Below are two images which are correct and incorrect. These show the best way to get the perfect shot between a mid shot and a close up to help get the correct effect.

CALL SHEETS -important information for music video

Both the images/text above and below when viewed show our details for the music video which we created. To help create a realistic representation of the specification we included details of the members included in the production and location details.
To help with this there are also dates showing production times and deadlines. This helped us organise our details for personal use and to also help keep information in order.
